In a reversal of the Bush Administration’s policy, the Government has now openned the door for battered spouses to seek asylum in the United States. This is obviously great news for many individuals and enhances the United States’ position as a defender of humanity. Nevertheless, as reported by the New York Times, asylum is not available to all battered spouses. Among other things, the battered spouses will need to demonstrate that their country widely tolerates domestic abuse and that they cannot find “protection from the abuse in their own country.
